Granny's Sugar Cookie Cutouts

ree

As mentioned in "The Lavine Boys' Christmas Caroling Adventures Book 1: The Early Years", ("That's the Way the Cookie Crumbles" & "Rolling in the Dough... and Icing") the boys LOVED to make cookies when they were little... and we made them often!

I've heard stories from quite a few folks who participated in family traditions of cookie and candy making around the Christmas season. They've shared memories of those special times spent with their loved ones, laughing, and creating sweet treats year after year. For some, these precious memories are what they are left with to revisit, as they reminisce of Christmas cookie making days gone by with someone who now has gone to be with Our Lord.

At my house growing up, we not only made cookies, but fudge, pecan turtles, peanut brittle and a peanut butter/sugar concoction topped with chocolate. Every December our kitchen would be filled with the smells of chocolate, caramel, peanut butter, peanut brittle, and cookies baking in the oven. When someone would walk into the house, the 'sniff' test would begin, to see if they could correctly identify what sweet treat had just been made.

As all my boys were growing up, we would return to my parents' family farm to assist Grandma Mary in continuing this Christmas tradition. Some years the boys would take turns, each having their own 'special time' with Grandma Mary making a particular cookie or candy. Some years, we would all join in the process together.

So what's with the picture of orange pumpkin cookies? Fall is a great time to make cookies too! Check out the 'Gifts to Give' section of this website for our recipe to our "Granny's Sugar Cookie Cut Outs". This would be a great time to make a batch and see how it goes with your crew. Now is a great time to begin brainstorming about what type of homemade 'gift to give' your family wants to make for your little caroling gig this Christmas season! Maybe the cut out cookies might be a good fit this year, or maybe another gift would fit your needs better. Whether the cookies are a 'go' or a 'no', I guarantee you will make memories trying it out! And if you don't have a Christmas cookie making tradition in your family, maybe this year would be a good time to start one!

*(For more 'gift to give' options, and help with getting essential caroling items in one spot, "The Lavine Boys' Christmas Caroling Kits" will be available soon!)
