Gifts To Give Ideas
Here we'll be sharing ideas of small homemade gifts to give while caroling. Beyond the 15 gifts we made over the years, there are many more ideas you can use. I'm hoping that all of you in our Christmas Caroling Community will have many more ideas to share!
Granny's Sugar Cookie Cut Outs
Items you will need:
Cookie Dough:
1 cup butter
2 cups sugar
2 eggs
1 tsp. Vanilla
1 tsp. salt
4 tsp. baking powder
4 cups flour
The boys LOVED to make cookies when they were little. We made cookies often! Granny's Sugar Cookie Cut Outs (as in Book 1) were one of our favorites! We not only made them at Christmas, but throughout the year.
Fall is a great time to make some pumpkin shaped cookies! Make a batch or two with your crew and brainstorm with them what type of cut out cookies they'd like to make for their caroling 'gifts to give' this year!
Icing:
1 tsp. almond extract
3 cups powdered sugar
6 tsp. milk
6 tsp corn syrup
Cookie cutters
Rolling Pins
Cookie Sheets
Small paint brushes
Parchment Paper (optional)
Icing Decorating Kit (optional)
Cream together butter and sugar. Blend in eggs and vanilla. Then add salt, baking powder and flour.
The dough rolls out easier if chilled first. When chilled, roll out (about 1/4" thick), cut out with cookie cutters. Bake on a lightly greased cookie sheet (or use parchment paper if you prefer it). I didn't use parchment paper during the caroling years, but prefer it now that I've discovered it.
Bake in oven at 400 degrees for 8-10 minutes.
When we began cookie making, we used icing that only contained powdered sugar, water and food coloring. We then switched out the water for milk and added almond extract and corn syrup (which gives the cookie icing a bit of a shine). Either icing works well. With both icings, thin or thicken them with the liquids and powdered sugar.
There were years the boys painted the icing on with paint brushes, and added things like sprinkles, and some years we used icing decorating tools with tips. Do whatever works best for your cookie makers!
